Sheep milk is truly special; it is one of the most nutritious milks available and may be helpful for people with allergies and stomach or digestion intolerances.
Every one of our animals is precious
Every one of our animals is precious to us and we are incredibly fortunate to have a team of very passionate and compassionate people who love working with ‘our girls’.
Every decision we make on the farm is focussed on doing our very best to encourage & develop a food production model that is better for our animals, our environment and our people.
Every day we challenge ourselves to find new and better ways to do things.
Sheep milk is a traditional milk that’s gentle to digest with many modern-life advantages.
People have been milking sheep in many parts of the world for thousands of years, and it is now experiencing a strong resurgence in popularity, as consumer needs and preferences evolve.
Sheep milk offers some important benefits that goat or cow’s milk lacks (even A2 milk). For this reason, the global production of sheep milk continues to increase as people experience the gentle digestion and nutritional benefits of alternative milks.
As well as superior nutrition, the environmental advantages of New Zealand sheep dairying vs. traditional dairying are now much better understood, and these sustainable options are rapidly gaining traction.

The New Zealand Animal Welfare Standards requires animals to be allowed the following five freedoms: Freedom to display normal patterns of behaviour; Freedom from thermal and physical discomfort, Freedom from thirst, hunger, and malnutrition; Freedom from distress; and Freedom from, or rapid treatment of, illness or injury.
We meet these standards and believe that animal welfare is not just characteristized by the absence of negative experiences for our animals but the presence of positive experiences.

Authenticity and Transparency
It is hard to know exactly what animals actually want – and we are not sure that anyone ever will.
We focus on giving our animals a good life with minimal suffering. This is important to us and our community - and we hold ourselves accountable to this, which is why authenticity and transparency is a huge part of who we are.
We acknowledge that not everyone agrees with drinking milk, but we invite you to respect that we are doing our very best to encourage & develop a food production model that is better for our animals, our environment and our people.
Less likely to trigger sensitivities and stomach or digestion intolerances
Studies suggest sheep milk may be a very good alternative for those who struggle with the digestion of cow’s milk or experience an upset stomach after drinking milk.
Proteins in sheep milk are very different to those in cow’s milk, in both structure and composition. Sheep milk is lower in a protein called alpha-S1 Casein which has been linked to allergic sensitisation in young children.

Freedom to roam
Our sheep have the freedom to roam our lush green pastures and to enjoy fresh air, warm sun and shelter when they want it. Our girls love shelter, especially during the heat of summer. On our outdoor farms tress provide protection from the elements, and on the indoor/outdoor farms, they sheep take shelter in the housing
Sheep milk is naturally an A2-type milk, free from A1 beta-casein protein found in most cow milk which has been associated with digestive discomfort such as painful cramps and bloating.
Sheep milk is also higher in short to medium chain fatty acids, which means these fats maybe easier to digest due to more efficient metabolism.

it is a bit of an unusual sight, but you may have noticed that most of our sheep have tails! We have eliminated unnecessary painful procedures, like tail removal, and it is only done when necessary for health reasons.
We like to keep all animals healthy. Good nutrition is part of this. Grass (and their respective silages and forage crops) is one of the best quality feeds for sheep. We provide our sheep a mostly grass-based diet as we believe this is the best option for their health and highest quality milk. At certain times of the year, we will augment this diet with other feeds (like grains) as they require it (e.g. just before lambing).
All feeds have been through a rigorous testing regime to determine suitability for feeding to our dairy ewes, and are accompanied by a feed declaration stating the feed is fit for feeding lactating dairy ewes.

Breeding Follows a Natural Seasonal Cycle
Breeding follows a natural seasonal cycle through natural and artificial insemination. During lambing season our passionate farm team work around the clock to ensure that survival rates are higher than those in nature.
Sheep milk is what is known as a ‘complete protein’ source, this means it contains all 10 essential amino acids. They are essential because the body cannot make them itself and must be consumed in one’s diet.

Lamb on Ewe
We have an active research & development farm team developing and testing a number of different ways to do sheep dairying in New Zealand. ‘Sharemilking’ or leaving lamb on the ewe/ milking the ewe at the same time she is feeding her lamb is one of those systems that we are trialling. All other lambs are on ewe for the first 48 hours, thereafter are hand-reared by the team.
We have a dedicated team of experts that cares for all of our sheep and our team get to know the girls. The farm team see the sheep at least a couple times per day and are quick to identify any health issues.

The very best Veterinary Support
Our animals receive the very best veterinary support if they ever need it. Just like with our children, when our sheep are not 100% we do use modern medicine to get them happy and healthy as soon as possible and isolate them from the milking flock during this time. Our milk is 100% free of antibiotics. You can rest easy that no antibiotics reach our milk because every batch of milk from our farms is 100% tested for antibiotics. It is a hard decision to make by the team, but when there are sheep that are truly unwell and don’t come right we do end their suffering.

Low stress inputs to milk production
Our girls are never rounded up or herded with sticks, shouting or dogs, but will in fact take themselves to the parlour (because they love the feed treats they get in there). More often than not we actually have to try and slow them down as they jostle for position in the race to the parlour twice per day. It’s quite a sight!
When their milk production drops off to a certain level, we stop milking and the ewes have dry spells between seasons. We never use hormones or any other artificial/ invasive practices to encourage milk production.
